Ganggane Tteokbokki | Must-Try Radish Tteokbokki

Last weekend, I headed to 광장시장 (Gwangjang Market) with my girlfriend for a lively date. With so many amazing foods around the market, I always found myself wondering what to eat. Yukhoe? Bindaetteok? Mayak Gimbap? 🤔

Then we ended up stopping by 강가네떡볶이 (Ganggane Tteokbokki) for some tteokbokki, something I hadn’t had in a while. It’s my girlfriend’s favorite spot in Gwangjang Market and, according to her, one of Seoul’s standout tteokbokki places. Apparently, even Park Myung-soo, who’s known for being picky about food, praised it on YouTube.

We arrived just after the lunch rush, so the line was shorter than usual.

🧍 Stepping into the Market Vibes With Standing Dining

There was a small standing area inside where customers could eat. The dining setup wasn’t exactly luxurious, but the food made up for it. Haha.

Since it’s located inside the market, bringing in or eating outside food is strictly prohibited. It’s worth keeping that in mind before visiting.

😋 Diving into Tteokbokki With Shredded Radish

The menu featured various Korean street food favorites, including tteokbokki, fried snacks, sotteok-sotteok, and sundae skewers.

We ordered the set that included tteokbokki and fried snacks together (6,000 KRW), plus one sundae skewer.

Sotteok-sotteok and a sundae skewer sat beside the tteokbokki.

The giant griddle immediately caught my eye. It was filled with thick garaetteok rice cakes, bright red sauce, and plenty of thinly sliced radish. I heard they created sweetness using the vegetable stock released from the radish instead of adding water, which definitely sparked my curiosity.

There was a huge pile of shredded radish stacked on one side, and they kept adding more into the tteokbokki.

They chopped up the rice cakes and topped them generously with the radish-based sauce before serving them to us.

🥢 Enjoying Ganggane Tteokbokki With Chewy Rice Cakes

The staff cut the garaetteok into bite-sized pieces, and after my first bite, I could tell just how wonderfully chewy the rice cakes were.

Maybe because of the shredded radish, the sauce wasn’t heavy at all. Instead, it tasted refreshing with a subtle natural sweetness. It had just the right balance of sweet and spicy flavors, making it easy to keep eating.

The sauce was so appealing that I briefly thought it’d work great with rice. Then I noticed a sign saying they sold the tteokbokki sauce separately—1kg for 15,000 KRW!

I almost bought some to take home and mix with rice, but I managed to hold back. 🤭

The sauce also paired really well with the fried snack we ordered, the gim-mari, so we happily polished it off.

Sundae skewers have become surprisingly difficult to find these days. Here, they fried the sundae first and then coated it with a sweet sotteok-sotteok sauce. The finishing touch was a ladle of tteokbokki sauce poured over the top by the owner. It was exactly the kind of flavor you’d expect, which is why it worked so well. 😄

Since it had been a long time since I’d eaten a sundae skewer, it also brought back some nostalgic memories.

We finished everything.

Overall, the flavor leaned much closer to old-school market tteokbokki than the intensely spicy styles that are common these days. The shredded-radish sauce tasted refreshing and oddly addictive, so I kept reaching back for another bite.
