Changbawi Restaurant | Real Native Chicken Near Ulsanbawi

The weather’s been so nice lately that plenty of people have been heading off to Gangwon-do on weekends and holidays, right? I also got away with some close friends and spent time around Goseong and Sokcho.

After staying one night at Kensington Resort and stopping by Misiryeong Valley, we looked for a restaurant for a late lunch that doubled as dinner on our way back to Seoul. Maybe we’re all getting older, but everyone naturally started craving Neungi Baeksuk and Dakdoritang, so it didn’t take long to agree.

Changbawi Restaurant was even featured by Lee Young-ja! It was also just 5 minutes from Ulsanbawi Rock and very close to Delpino Resort in Goseong, so it seemed like a great spot for breakfast the morning after staying nearby.

🍲 Diving into Rich Flavors With Neungi Baeksuk

The signature dish here seemed to be Neungi Baeksuk, which was proudly displayed on the signboard. After one bite, the broth completely blew me away. It was incredibly rich and flavorful.

I usually pick Dakdoritang over Baeksuk every single time, but at this restaurant, I couldn’t help giving my vote to the deep, concentrated flavor of the Neungi Baeksuk broth.

The distinctive aroma of the Neungi mushrooms had soaked into the soup, and it felt like all the fatigue from the trip melted away. It almost felt like a hangover cure even though I didn’t have a hangover.

🌶️ Digging Into Spicy Dakdoritang With Fried Rice

We didn’t want to stop at Baeksuk alone, so we also ordered Dakdoritang. The spicy, savory seasoning paired perfectly with rice.

The Neungi Baeksuk had tasted like a restorative meal, but this Dakdoritang had the kind of flavor that made you want another drink.

And with a spicy sauce like this, fried rice is a must. It actually wasn’t listed on the menu, so we were about to order plain rice and mix it ourselves. The owner overheard our conversation and kindly told us they could absolutely fry it up for us.

As always, fried rice was the perfect Korean-style dessert. We mixed it into the remaining Dakdoritang sauce and wrapped up the meal feeling completely satisfied.

🍶 Savoring Gangwon Flavors With Corn Dongdongju and More

Whenever I travel around Korea, I love trying regional makgeolli specialties. And when you think of Gangwon-do, potatoes and corn immediately come to mind.

The potato pancake at Changbawi Restaurant wasn’t the shredded style that’s common in Seoul these days. Instead, it was the classic chewy version made from freshly ground potatoes, which made it even more enjoyable.

They also served “Saimdang Corn Dongdongju,” so I gave it a try. It had a pleasant sweetness, and paired with the potato pancake, the combination was fantastic.

Everything we tried at Changbawi Restaurant turned out delicious, so we added squid sundae as our final dish. It was even chewier and more generously filled than the versions I’d eaten at the Sokcho market, and I enjoyed every bite despite already being full.

1. Anyone looking for a nourishing meal: If you’d rather enjoy a deep, rich bowl of Neungi Baeksuk than heavily seasoned food, this place would suit you well.

2. Groups of five or more travelers: The dining area was spacious, making it comfortable for families and groups of friends.

3. Anyone wanting to experience the flavors of Gangwon-do: I’d recommend it if you’re looking for authentic chewy potato pancakes made from ground potatoes and a great dongdongju pairing.

💬 Wrapping Up With Changbawi Restaurant

I enjoyed every dish I tried, but if I had to pick just one, I’d say Changbawi Restaurant truly stood out for its Neungi Baeksuk.

One thing to keep in mind is that the cooking took a bit of time. I’d recommend calling at least an hour before your visit to ask them to start preparing your food, or simply making a reservation in advance.
