Shindonggung Bone Charcoal BBQ | The Spicy Dish I Kept Craving
Have you ever had one of those days after work when you couldn’t stop craving something spicy and bold?
Wanting a hearty meat-filled meal to shake off some stress, I headed to 신동궁 감자탕 뼈숯불구이 (a gamjatang and charcoal-grilled pork bone restaurant) near Seolleung Station.
This place was known not only for its pork bone hangover soup but also for its spicy Bone Charcoal BBQ infused with smoky charcoal flavor and its sweet-savory braised pork bones. It’s become quite popular among nearby office workers. From the complimentary spicy napa cabbage greens soup to the generous portions of meat and even fried rice, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
🔥 Stepping into the Lively After-Work Crowd

As soon as I arrived, the savory and spicy aroma coming from the restaurant immediately worked up my appetite.

A packed dining room full of customers.
Once I walked in, it was difficult to find an empty table because so many people had gathered for dinner and after-work meetups. Fortunately, we arrived right after work and managed to grab a seat. Rather than being quiet and calm, the restaurant had a lively atmosphere where people chatted away and unwound after a long day.

Before ordering, the restaurant served the napa cabbage greens soup and side dishes. After tasting the broth, I noticed a slight spicy kick and started wondering if the main dishes would be even hotter. (If the soup already feels very spicy to you, you might want to skip the Bone Charcoal BBQ!)

The menu featured both Bone Charcoal BBQ and braised pork bones.
Bone Charcoal BBQ was a spicy grilled pork bone dish with almost no broth, while the braised pork bones came with a small amount of sauce and used a soy sauce-based seasoning that reminded me of braised chicken.
We ended up ordering both dishes.
🍖 Diving into Shindonggung Bone Charcoal BBQ With Smoky Heat

A mountain of spicy Bone Charcoal BBQ served alongside cabbage salad.
The main dish finally arrived, piled high on a large plate.
The rich red seasoning coated every piece evenly. Each bite delivered a spicy kick followed by a subtle sweetness that kept drawing me back for more. If you enjoy spicy food, I’d say it landed right in that deliciously spicy zone.
The meat had been cooked so thoroughly that it pulled away from the bone with just a gentle nudge from my chopsticks.

After a while, the spice started building up, but the cabbage salad served on the side balanced everything out nicely. The thinly sliced cabbage and yuzu-based dressing softened the heat and added a refreshing contrast. It was the kind of side dish almost anyone would enjoy.
🍜 For Glass Noodle Lovers Craving Sweet-Savory Braised Bones

Soy sauce-based braised pork bones with glass noodles and potatoes.
If you’re dining with someone who doesn’t handle spicy food very well, the braised pork bones would be a great option. The dish came loaded with large pieces of meat, potatoes, and glass noodles coated in a sweet and savory soy sauce-based seasoning.

Glass noodles and well-cooked potatoes from the braised pork bones.
The chewy glass noodles soaked up all the sauce, making them especially satisfying to eat. The potatoes had cooked down until fluffy and tender, and mashing them into the sauce created another delicious bite.
One tip: if you’re planning to order both dishes, start with the braised pork bones. The Bone Charcoal BBQ packed such a strong punch of flavor that the braised version felt a bit mild afterward. My taste buds may have been overwhelmed by the charcoal-grilled dish.
🍚 Pairing Everything With Flavor-Packed Fried Rice

Many people order fried rice at the end of the meal, but the seasoning was so good that we couldn’t wait. We ordered it midway through and ate it alongside the Bone Charcoal BBQ.
Combined with the flavorful meat from the grilled bones, it turned into the ultimate rice-stealing dish.
The flavors were definitely bold, but the spicy seasoning kept coming back to mind even after the meal ended.
I managed to relieve some stress and finished dinner feeling completely satisfied.
