Haetan Bucheon | Spicy Squid & Kalguksu Pairing

Yesterday, the weather was so nice that I found myself craving a beer with friends for the first time in a while. I couldn’t have been the only one, right? Haha.

When I headed out to the popular Sinjung-dong Station area in Bucheon, every food alley was packed with outdoor seating and crowds, just as expected.

Instead of joining the long waits at the outdoor hotspots, we picked a squid restaurant where we could casually enjoy a few drinks with our meal.

The exterior immediately caught my eye before we even stepped inside.

Despite the hot weather, the sign already gave off a clean and fresh impression.

🦑 Stepping into a Spacious Dining Area With a Clean Self-Serve Bar

This was the large self-serve bar set up on one side of the restaurant. From fresh wrap vegetables like lettuce to chilled bean sprout soup and warm scorched-rice tea, everything was generously stocked, making it perfect alongside spicy dishes. Until 2 PM, guests could also refill rice from a large rice cooker as much as they wanted. It seemed like an incredible value spot for a hearty lunch.

I didn’t manage to take photos of the seating area, but the tables were nicely spaced apart. The entire restaurant felt bright, clean, and comfortable, making it great for chatting with friends.

Ordering was done through a tablet right at the table.

The safest-looking choice was the Haetan Hansang set menu, which included Stone Plate Squid (for two), Flower Pork Belly Suyuk (small) with seasoned squid salad, and a half portion of squid fritters.

There were four of us, so we added kalguksu noodles to the Haetan Hansang set and ordered a squid aged-kimchi pancake on the side.

The staff brought over the basic side dishes along with sauces that matched the dishes we ordered.

🥩 Diving into Flower Pork Belly Suyuk With Squid Salad and White Kimchi

This was the Flower Pork Belly Suyuk included in the Haetan Hansang set, which arrived first. It was neatly arranged over fragrant chives in a steamer.

Wrapping it with the savory, spicy squid salad and white kimchi doubled the richness, while the different textures made every bite even more enjoyable.

🍤 Enjoying Crispy Squid Fritters and a Crunchy Pancake

Squid fritters and pancakes are always a winning combination. Here were the beautifully plated squid fritters and squid aged-kimchi pancake.

The squid in the kimchi pancake was chopped into small pieces. It wasn’t overly spicy or salty, and the edges were incredibly crispy, making it hard to stop reaching for another bite.

🐙 Savoring Haetan Bucheon Stone Plate Squid With Smoky Flavor

Finally, our main dish arrived: Stone Plate Squid.

Even from the photo, the bright red color looked packed with flavor. It came out sizzling on a hot stone plate, and the plump, chewy squid had soaked up a smoky, spicy sauce that felt absolutely perfect with rice.

But that wasn’t the end.

We added thick kalguksu noodles.

These days, squid-and-kalguksu and octopus-and-kalguksu combinations are trending everywhere, and the viral social media presentation was right in front of me. Mixing the generous noodles into the sauce was incredibly satisfying. Once the sweet-and-spicy seasoning coated every strand, each slurp practically called for another sip of beer.

It had a slight kick, but it wasn’t overwhelmingly spicy. It leaned more toward sweet and spicy, so even people who don’t handle heat very well could enjoy it. If you’re worried, there’s also an option to add cheese.

Since there were four of us, we initially wondered whether the Haetan Hansang set would be enough.

In the end, the combination of squid stir-fry, noodles, fritters, and pancake was just the right amount for four adult men.
