Katsu Shoshin Gangnam | Rosu Katsu & Hire Katsu Review
I wanted a hearty meat-focused dinner near Gangnam, so I stopped by 카츠쇼신 강남점 (Katsu Shoshin’s Gangnam branch).
It was already well known as one of Seoul’s four great tonkatsu spots and a brand created by a Michelin chef, so I’d been curious about it for a while. I went in without overly high expectations, but I ended up enjoying the meal quite a bit, so I decided to share a quick review.

🏯 Stepping into a Spot With a Clean Japanese Tonkatsu Vibe

Clean interior of Katsu Shoshin Gangnam
The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how clean everything felt.
The warm interior design created a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, making it easy to enjoy the meal at a calm pace.

Katsu Shoshin table ordering system using smartphone tags
After sitting down, I found an interesting ordering system that worked through an NFC tag.
All I had to do was unlock my phone and hold it nearby, and the menu popped right up. It was convenient because I could browse without calling over a staff member. If the tag didn’t work, a QR code option was available too.
🥩 Diving into Crispy-Outside, Juicy-Inside Rosu Katsu and Hire Katsu
I visited with a companion that day, so we ordered both the rosu katsu and hire katsu to try a variety of dishes.

The rosu katsu had just the right amount of fat mixed in, and the savory flavor became more noticeable with every bite. The coating was crisp while the inside stayed moist, creating a really satisfying texture.

The rosu katsu felt like a great choice for anyone who enjoys rich flavor and a satisfying bite.

The hire katsu felt substantial when I picked it up with chopsticks, and the cross-section showed a beautiful pink color.

Juicy and tender Katsu Shoshin hire katsu
The meat was incredibly tender and almost seemed to melt apart in my mouth. If you don’t usually enjoy dry cuts of meat, the hire katsu would probably suit your taste much better.
🍲 Enjoying Tonjiru Packed With Generous Pork

Katsu Shoshin tonjiru filled with pork
One thing that personally stood out to me at Katsu Shoshin was the tonjiru.
Most tonkatsu restaurants serve miso soup by default, but here they served a rich tonjiru loaded with large pieces of pork. The broth had great depth, and it paired perfectly with rice.

Katsu Shoshin curry
The curry, topped with crispy garlic flakes, was another enjoyable side. It worked well as a dipping sauce for the katsu, and it was also delicious mixed into rice. From the quality of the meat to the side dishes, everything tasted satisfying.
