ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Fukuoka | Great Location and Amazing Breakfast
When I pick a hotel overseas, I really only have one criterion: distance from the station. If it’s more than a 5-minute walk, it’s out. I can’t stand dragging a suitcase around while trying to find my way when I’m already tired.
That’s why I chose ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Fukuoka, which is an IHG hotel in Fukuoka, for a business trip to Fukuoka. It’s just a 3-minute walk from Hakata Station. That one condition was enough for me to book it.
But after I arrived, I realized it wasn’t just the location that stood out. The breakfast was incredible! I actually got up early just to eat breakfast during my business trip—and that was definitely me.
🌙 Arriving With a Safe and Welcoming First Impression
The “ANA CROWNE PLAZA FUKUOKA” sign and revolving-door entrance were easy to spot. I arrived late at night, but since the hotel sat along a main road and was brightly lit, it felt safe right away.
Inside the lobby, there was an escalator leading up and a classic chandelier hanging overhead. It did feel a little dated, but in a way that made me think, “This hotel has some history.” Since it’s part of the IHG global chain, it also felt reliable.
🗝️ Checking In With Helpful Staff
There were two staff members at the counter, and communicating in English was easier than I expected. I had wanted a single room, but none were left, so I booked a twin room instead. I checked again at the front desk on the day of arrival in case a single room had opened up through a cancellation, and the staff explained everything clearly.
Near the elevators, there was a guide showing the facilities on each floor. Crown Café, where breakfast is served, is on the first floor. The fitness center is on the third floor. Restaurants are on the 14th and 15th floors, and there’s a lounge on the M2 floor.
One feature surprised me. I didn’t even have to press an elevator button. When I tapped my room key, the elevator automatically lit up the floor where my room was located. I expected something more analog, but it turned out to be more high-tech than I thought.
I should also mention the swimming pool. Apparently, the hotel used to have a beautiful pool that looked perfect for swimming, but it’s no longer there. That was a little disappointing. There’s still a fitness center, though. If you’re considering this hotel because you’ve seen old photos of the pool, definitely keep that in mind.
🛏️ Stepping Into a Surprisingly Spacious Room
Japanese hotels are famous for being compact, right? Usually it’s a bed and a narrow walkway.
But this room felt spacious as soon as I walked in. Even with two single beds, there was plenty of room in between. There was also a built-in wardrobe near the window beside the TV, making it easy to hang up clothes.
The interior wasn’t exactly modern. 😅 It featured a wooden headboard with red accent colors. It didn’t have the sleek look of newer hotels, but the bedding was clean and comfortable, which was all I needed for a good night’s sleep.
The bathroom also felt less cramped than many Japanese hotel bathrooms.
The amenities included shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion. I’d never heard of the brand before, but after trying them, I found them pleasantly soft and surprisingly good quality.
🍳 Diving Into ANA Crowne Plaza Fukuoka Breakfast
The next morning, I headed down to Crown Café on the first floor. Breakfast is served from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
There was a sign near the entrance showing expected crowd levels by time slot using emojis. According to the guide, 8:00–9:00 a.m. was the busiest period, while 6:00–7:00 a.m. was quieter. Seeing that level of detail made me think, “This is so Japan.”
At the restaurant entrance, I handed over my breakfast coupon and was guided to table 31. There was a wooden sign on the table that read, “Thank you for finishing your meal.” In other words, they didn’t want food waste. 😆
After finishing breakfast, guests take the purple card from their table and hand it to a staff member at the entrance.
And now for the food. Japanese hotel buffets often have a reputation for being underwhelming, but this one was packed with variety. There were plenty of dishes that really highlighted Japanese flavors, so it’s worth looking forward to.
The salad, fruit, and yogurt section included grapefruit, pineapple, watermelon slices, and locally produced unsweetened yogurt.
For drinks, there were energy-shot smoothies, milk, soy milk, acerola drinks, and dispensers for apple and orange juice.
There were the usual hot breakfast items like scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausages. The bread selection included croissants, pancakes, baguettes, muesli bread, rye bread, and sandwich bread. Next to them sat the famous Balmuda toaster that’s said to bring even stale bread back to life.
Up to this point, it felt fairly standard, but then…
Have you ever seen a Japanese curry station at a hotel buffet? There was ANA Crowne Plaza’s special spicy curry, marked as a Fukuoka-exclusive item. It came with pickled vegetables and rakkyo. Under a sign labeled “Hakata Specialty,” there were also spicy pollock roe, natto, and umeboshi.
And that wasn’t all. There was even a ramen station. Next to the warmer filled with Hakata tonkotsu broth, a hand-drawn “How to make RAMEN!” guide showed guests how to boil the noodles, pour the soup, and add toppings. Being able to enjoy tonkotsu ramen for breakfast felt uniquely Fukuoka.
The most memorable part was the sushi roll station. A staff member prepared each roll right in front of guests, and there were four options:
1. Salmon + cabbage
2. Prosciutto + bonito
3. Plum + avocado + chicken
4. Mentaiko (Fukuoka exclusive)
Each roll was made fresh to order, so getting one felt surprisingly luxurious for breakfast. I don’t usually make a point of eating breakfast, but while staying here, I got up early for it even when I was tired.
I liked the location, service, and overall value enough that I’d happily book this hotel again for my next business trip.
